Hammer is renowned for the Gothic horror films that dominated its output from the mid 1950’s onwards. The company was the first in Britain to make such films in colour, and caused a sensation with its daring mix of horror and eroticism, outraging critics and censors, but audiences around the world flocked to the films for twenty years.

Hammer’s success was built on a combination of sex and horror and glamour was a key element in the company’s marketing campaigns. The poster for ‘She‘ acclaimed Ursula Andress as ‘The world’s most beautiful woman in the world‘ and ‘One Million Years B.C.‘ made Raquel Welch an international star. Hammer’s leading ladies continue to enjoy cult status.
